Motivation is the impulse, the spark, the push to begin something. It can be the fuel that starts that new project or hobby or behaviour, but what happens when it doesn't show up? Is it still possible to do what you were originally moved to without motivation?

You know the answer. It has to be yes.

The word motivation comes from the word motive (meaning reason), which came from the French word motif, which in turn comes from the Latin word movere, or to move. That is what motivation is- a reason to move.

The problem with motivation comes when we have the wrong 'reasons to move.' Are we moving/motivated because of external things like money, girls/boys, status, promotion, or winning a match or championship?

Or are we moving/motivated because of internal things like discipline, self-worth, the image of the person we want to be, consistency, or continuous improvement?

The ironic thing is that motivation often shows up after we start the action. It gives us a reason to keep moving. I'm progressing because I'm acting/moving therefore I am motivated/I have a reason to keep moving. It's a virtuous cycle.

If you think you lack motivation for something, ask yourself: is it something that I really want? does it align to the imagine of the person I want to be? can I do it consistently? can I find the discipline to do it consistently even when I don't want to?

If you answer yes to these questions, the results will be much more profound than if you are motivated by a girl or money or a championship. You won't try as much if you don't have the possibility of earning money? getting the girl? or winning the title? That can't be true.

So ask yourself: what can I do, even on my worst day?

This trains discipline, self-worth, and by acting and doing, it reinforces the image of the person you want to be.

Everyone can move when the sun is shining and everything is perfect. But what happens when it's dark outside and obstacles appear? Can we move then?

These are the days we must, and if we are disciplined then we will.

Because our bad days matter more than our good days.

And discipline matters more than motivation.


TIPS

  1. Start small. Always think: what can I do on my worst day?
  2. Do something you don't want to do every day.
  3. Be alert to motivation increases and decreases (this is why number 2 is so important- you will do things even when you are not motivated).
