How to practise English for 10 minutes every day

On a good day, you feel like you can do anything. You work out, you study, you read, you work and play and practise your English! You feel incredible. But what happens when it's not a good day? Can you still show up and practise your English, even if it is just for ten minutes per day? The answer is yes!

Why?


Because the person who is able to form and maintain a habit like practising their English will have a huge advantage as the habit will become a part of their identity and something they won't want to give up. It's not just my opinion, scientific research shows that when a habit becomes part of an identity, the behaviour is easier to maintain.

Here is a summary of that research:

The Psychology of Habit-Identity Integration:

  • Self-Perception Theory: Studies show that when we frequently observe our own behaviours, we subconsciously believe that the action is deeply meaningful to us.
  • Identity-Based Goals: Focusing on who you wish to become (e.g."I am an English speaker") rather than what you want to achieve (e.g. "I want to speak English") brings stronger long-term behavioural changes.
  • Cognitive Effort: Studies on habit-identity integration demonstrate that when habits align with central values, people experience stronger self-esteem and an easier time maintaining new behaviours.

The Feedback Loop:

The relationship between habit and identity is a continuous, reciprocal cycle:

  1. Belief: Your identity informs your core motivations and shapes the habits you choose to pursue.
  2. Action: You repeatedly execute the habit (e.g. learning every day).
  3. Proof: The consistency of your actions provides undeniable evidence to your self-perception/identity.
  4. Identity Shift: You internalise the behaviour, creating a new narrative about who you are.

The Conclusion:

Just like going to the gym or eating healthily, English practice is a habit. When you say to yourself: I am an active person, or I am an English speaker, you are training your subconscious mind to believe that the behaviour you want to do (practise English) is a part of your identity, therefore you have more chance of doing it for a long period of time. This provides the proof or evidence that you need to reinforce the behaviour and the identity, which further shows that you are the type of person who can practise English for ten minutes every day because you are an English speaker, therefore it is something that you naturally do because it is a part of who you are.

So, if you really want to improve your English, stop saying: "I want to speak English", and begin saying: "I am an English speaker."

TIPS

  1. Use "I am" Statements: Instead of setting a goal like "I want to speak English," frame it around your identity: "I am an English speaker."
  2. Stack Small Wins: Every time you perform a small, positive habit, you vote for your desired identity.
  3. Focus on the Process: The repetition of small disciplines makes maintaining the habit easier.
