What happens when every week, you take an English class and then do nothing until the next one?

The answer: probably not a lot.

Because in order to really make progress with your English, you need to be in contact with the language. That doesn't mean you have to be speaking, reading or listening to English all day (it would obviously help though), but there are some easy things you can do which will guarantee you are more connected to the language, which will consequently help your development.

These easy, simple, one-time actions will trigger thoughts in English, make you naturally read, write and listen to more English, and train your subconscious to process more information in English in the same way a native speaker would. You don't need to be Albert Einstein to determine that the more contact you have with English, the more you will learn and progress.

So what can you do?

A variety of actions that take seconds but have benefits that last a lifetime.

Here is a list to get you started:

  • Change your phone's system language to English. Every notification, menu, and setting now teaches you passively.
  • Switch your social media and Netflix interface language to English.
  • Set your phone keyboard to English so autocorrect stops fighting you.
  • Download a good monolingual dictionary app (English-to-English, not translation).
  • Subscribe to one English podcast that matches your level and interest.
  • Buy a course or book you'll actually use.
  • Set English subtitles on by default for everything you watch (with the goal of removing them).
  • Follow 10 English-speaking accounts in a topic you love (football, cooking, whatever).
  • Change your browser's default language and search region.
  • Put sticky notes with English labels on objects around your home or desk.
  • Bookmark one reliable grammar reference so you're not Googling random forums.
  • Join one English-speaking community or group chat in your field.

Because even if you do just half of these things, you will automatically think more in English, be connected more to English, therefore your chances of improving your English will skyrocket.

Sometimes we think that in order to make changes or progress we need to move mountains. However, it's often the little actions that we repeat over time that have the greatest impact.

You just need to start...

Welcome to 1% Every Thursday you receive tips and content to help you improve your English skills, 1 % at a time. The rise in the use of AI is nothing new. Even my 70 year old father said he consulted it to plan a trip to Vietnam. For me, this type of employment is more like an advanced use of Google- it searches for things based on the prompt you give it, but with the caveat that it can create documents and/or itineraries for you based on time restrictions, budget, and any other preference...

Welcome to 1% Every Thursday you receive tips and content to help you improve your English skills, 1 % at a time. Generally, people think that if they are the one talking, then they are the one controlling the conversation. This is logical. If you are the one driving the car, then surely you decide where to go. However, the co-pilot- who is reading the map- is the one saying: "turn right; go straight; turn left," at least they did before Google Maps arrived. Therefore, who is really in...
