For the first edition of The Pending Subject in 2026, I want to inspire you to become the speaker you want to be. This is the year you are going to speak English with confidence and calm. How? you ask. Well, like everything, you need a plan, you need to be positive, you need to practise, and then you need to keep going.

A plan I highly recommend to improve belief when speaking is the Anxiety Management Plan (AMP) developed by Stanford University Professor Matt Abrahams. Abrahams is a communication expert and his AMP will help you to speak with confidence and clarity in any situation.

The framework is a mix of psychological and structural preparation- if you prepare yourself mentally, have clear structures to use, you will speak better.

Below you will find an outline of Matt's framework and how you can use it. I also highly recommend his book: Think Faster, Talk Smarter.

I hope you find the content and tips useful.

CONTENT

  1. The AMP by Matt Abrahams has three steps:

A - Accept: Acknowledge that feeling anxious is normal and okay. Accepting anxiety reduces the pressure, allowing you to focus on the content rather than fighting your nerves.

M - Manage: Actively manage your physical and mental state. Techniques include deep breathing, reframing nerves as excitement, and pausing to collect your thoughts.

P - Prepare: Create an "anxiety management plan" in advance. This involves having go-to, simple, structured frameworks (like Problem-Solution-Benefit) ready to use, which helps reduce the fear of the unknown when speaking spontaneously.

TIPS

  1. A= Give yourself permission to make mistakes. If you are not a native speaker (and even if you are), you may make mistakes. That is OK! The purpose of communication is to convey your message in a way that people understand it. If you don't say a verb in the past or forget an 's' at the end of a word and it doesn't distract from the meaning, don't worry!
  2. M= Tell yourself it's an opportunity to practise, it's exciting, it's a way to step out of my comfort zone and improve. All of these messages transmit positivity and will help you to speak with confidence.
  3. P= Have frameworks you can use as a guide so you don't go blank. If you are selling something or talking about a problem then the Problem- Solution- Benefit structure is a great one to use. You describe the problem, then the solution, and then show how the solution makes someone's world better. (For more information on structures visit my website and check out The Pending Subject in the following weeks).

A CHALLENGE

Design your AMP and start using it. Give yourself permission to feel nervous and make mistakes, make a plan to feel optimistic about speaking in English in public, and have structures and frameworks you can use. Do this and you will quickly feel more confident when speaking in any situation!

You just need to start...

(A great place to start is the 5-5-5 Progress Plan).

AN INSPIRING QUOTE

"Inhale courage, exhale fear." Unknown.

Have a plan, breathe, then execute!

You just need to start...

Welcome to 1% Every Thursday you receive tips and content to help you improve your English skills, 1 % at a time. People often make to-do-lists when they want to complete a task or get better at something. You should also consider what NOT to do, especially if you are trying to progress in something like English. One thing you could think about is: what could I remove? Here are somethings I recommend removing/not doing: Subtitles (especially if you have an intermediate/advanced level). All...

Welcome to 1% Every Thursday you receive tips and content to help you improve your English skills, 1 % at a time. In general terms, the Pareto Law states that 80% of results come from 20% of actions. For example: 80% of physical improvements come from 20% of exercises, or 80% of profits come from 20% of customers, or 80% of language progress comes from 20% of activities. So, if we apply this law to your English development, we need to consider the following: What do I spend 80% of my time...

Welcome to 1% Every Thursday you receive tips and content to help you improve your English skills, 1 % at a time. How regularly does a native speak English? How frequently does a professional athlete train? How often does a world-class musician practise? Every day would be the answer. That is why all three of these examples become proficient at what they do. They do something every day. Not just anything. Something specific, and related to their overall goal. Because small, seemingly...
