Communication skills, otherwise known as 'soft skills' or the ability to interact effectively with other people, are more important than ever according to many leaders and academic institutions. Steven Bartlett, host of The Diary Of A CEO, one of the world's most listened to podcasts said recently, "Human skills, people skills, are going to be of extreme value in a world of robotics and AI." Industry experts in insurance, hospitality, and medicine have also told me the same. They say that the skill that people most need to learn and develop is how to communicate and be around others. Research coming out of Harvard reflects this too. "Employers have been trying to 'up-skill' workers to compete in an automated, artificial intelligence world. But bosses and workers should not forget general—and potentially even more important—fundamentals that serve as a foundation for ongoing learning. Sometimes called 'soft skills,' colleagues’ ability to communicate, interact, and think critically underpins (forms the foundation/base) how people acquire more advanced professional skills." So in other words, if you can communicate and think better, you have more chance of learning other skills, showing once again how important the ability to think and communicate really is. In a M.I.T interview discussing the success of change management in companies, Matt Abrahams, a communications expert from Stanford Graduate School of Business, said, "When it comes to the actual work of change management for business transformation, all of the research states that you must involve communication and expectation setting. As you perform change management, not actively planning for communication will result in failure." So, if you cannot communicate properly, the changes your company are trying to implement will ultimately fail, once again showing the importance of this ancient skill. And, in an article in The Harvard Business Review, research is showing that you increase your chances of promotion and therefore a higher salary if you can communicate well. "Those who scored highly on basic skills were more likely to earn higher wages throughout their careers, move into more advanced roles, learn specialised skills more quickly, and were more resilient to industry changes. The presence and development of foundational skills didn’t just make workers more competitive for entry level jobs—they determined how far they could climb the career ladder." Communication is what the house stands on. If you can't articulate well, express your thoughts with clarity, and know how to be around your peers, you not only have less chance of promotion, but you also are more unlikely to adapt well to change (and we have a lot coming) and learn new skills, making you less of an asset for a company. AI is transforming the workplace and the world, but some things remain, and one of them is the importance of developing your "soft skills."
